Why else, indeed. Why must you be so narrow minded, (i.e., close-minded), Paul? Bruce has never changed his view of the political elite in this country, (i.e., Republicans), and never will. Deal with it.
Really, who is Bruce refering to in the first four lines?
Not Republicans.

I can't imagine that Bruce has ever described Conservatives as having good intentions or good hearts. In fact it probably wouldn't be hard to find examples of Bruce saying quite the opposite.
With whom do you get angrier with? Someone you are closely aligned with that betrays your expectations or someone who you expect to act contrary to your wishes? Is it possible that Bruce is angry with the President for not living up to his hope and change promise?
While, as you say Bruce may never change his mind regarding Republicans (Does this indicate a closed mind?) that does not mean that he cannot alter his view of what the Dems are doing, and possibly call for a third way to address a problem. Which btw is what I think he is doing in this song.
