On the other hand, and after news spread that the mayor of Vancouver is calling for people to save photos of hooliganism as they might be used to arrest suspects, several Facebook groups have assembled urging people to post photos of rioters and tag them if possible.
A Tumblr blog set up for the same purpose has amassed dozens of photos within hours.
And via Twitter, the Vancouver Police Department also encouraged witnesses of the riot to hold onto their photos and videos so they can later identify suspects in them. On Thursday, the VPD plans to tweet instructions on how to submit photos and videos as evidence. During the riot, the VPD used Twitter to express its disappointment, tweeting, “So sad watching our #VPD cars on fire and how quickly people can turn from law abiding to law breaking. #canucksriot.”
The initiative to clean up the city is an example of how social media can be used to help in situations like these.
