Movie Review: 'Burlesque' An Engaging Musical!
    Monday, 22 November 2010
    Written by JimmyO

Who would have ever thought about casting Christina Aguilera in her big screen debut, opposite the legendary superstar Cher? Former actor, Steve Antin did, and now we have a huge, extravagant movie musical called Burlesque.

A small town girl named Ali (Aguilera) decides it’s high time to get away from her cheap ass boss and head on down to Hollywood. Once there, she starts looking for a place to make a living as a dancer, the girl’s a natural after all! Going through the Backstage West, she starts to get desperate and things aren’t looking good. That is, until she spies a little place with a sign that calls her name… “Burlesque”!

Once inside the joint, she is transfixed by the raw sensuality and the incredibly beautiful dancers on stage. She speaks to the bartender, a handsome gent named Jack (Cam Gigandet) and he informs her of the woman in charge. Soon, Ali is literally begging the owner of the club Tess (Cher) to give her a shot. After finally giving in and seeing Ali perform, Tess hires her to dance. A musical is born!

Let’s start with Cher. We haven’t seen her in a film for around seven years. Let’s just say that she hasn’t lost her spark. Her energy and her confidence are pretty magnificent. She tackles two songs in the film, both on stage as this musical keeps the music aspect realistic. In other words, nobody breaks into song for no reason. Her enthusiastic opening number is a fun bit of song and dance. Then we have a ballad called “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” which is so freaking obvious, but you know what, it works. She pulls it off just fine and luckily, she has a much bigger role than you’d expect.

Now put Cher together with Stanley Tucci, and you have one of the most engaging couples on-screen this year. The two actors are clearly having a great time together. That sort of energy doesn’t always translate well, but it sure does here. The playful banter is a real treat and somehow it keeps the over-the-top aesthetics down closer to earth. In fact, one of the most impressive things about this movie is the fact that they don’t get as melodramatic as some musicals tend to do.

The much recycled plot about a dance club owner facing financial woes is handled surprisingly well. Sure Tess needs money, but they don’t all get together for a big old musical gala to earn the cash. The outcome somehow feels a little bit more reasonable than that. Don’t worry though; it is still a glitzy, flashing musical with a ton of well choreographed singing and dancing!

That of course brings us to Ms. Aguilera. The first time she sings at the club is simply stunning! Man, woman and child will be in awe of this show stopping number! And guess what? The girl can act too. Not saying that this is super challenging role, but she gives a sweet and sexy performance that feels unexpectedly honest. She is sexy when necessary, and she is crazy vulnerable too. In fact, she is a pretty solid anchor for this escapist fun.

Credit should go to a couple of surprisingly good performances. Both Cam Gigandet and especially Kristen Bell are really enjoyable. Ms. Bell plays the bitchy chick exceedingly well, and damn was she sexy when necessary. And for the ladies, Cam is very amiable as a good guy musician who helps out a friend. And yes for those who may care, he appears in the buff wearing only a box of cookies.

Burlesque is an entertaining little flick that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Writer/director Steve Antin handles the material well enough, even if he lacks some of the flair a more experienced director may have brought. And of course the storyline is a tad too predictable. So frankly, the music is the key! The performances and the dancing certainly breathed life into the film and made for an easy-on-the-eyes extravaganza. Sure it isn’t perfect, but Cher and Aguilera certainly make it an engaging couple of hours.

And guess what!? IT WILL COUNT ON ROTTEN TOMATOES!!!
