View Full Version : OT - OMG! Caught in the Oil... :(

Look at this.... so sad!!! :(

A short entry - AP Photographer Charlie Riedel just filed the following images of seabirds caught in the oil slick on a beach on Louisiana's East Grand Terre Island. As BP engineers continue their efforts to cap the underwater flow of oil, landfall is becoming more frequent, and the effects more evident.

Out of curiosity, those of you who are unhappy with Obama's response, or BP's response, what would you like them to have done differently? Why do you think it was a bad response?

I still do get how hard it is to fix the issue and why is there just a free flowing pipe without any sort of shut off valve. It seems like they don't really care. Like this morning, they showed Obama down at the coast greeting people about the issue. Uhm... do you really have time to shake 12 hands for a photo op?! Try getting a team together to work on ways to fix this instead of having BP's whack ass keep throwing failed domes over it.

that's sad. and to think the oil will probably keep flowing 'till august

Well, those failed domes are a highly expensive, time consuming failure. If they weren't going to actually TRY, they wouldn't spend that much money on it.

Furthermore, what do BP have to gain from allowing it to leak? It's their money that's dripping away onto the US/Mexican coast, and while oil companies are rich by nature, this is going to be catastrophic to them when you factor in all the claims for compensation too.

The incompetence comes from it being allowed to happen in the first place; once it started, there was very little BP or Obama can do. Obama especially, what do you want him to do?

I haven't really read either response besides "we're working on it." From the outside looking in, it doesn't really seem like a major deal to them. It's been 46 days so far (which I had no clue it's been that long.) and they've YET to come up with a decent plan. It's like they're purposely ridding oil at this point.

Well firstly I would like there to be 100% effort in creating renewable energy resources so we do not have to depend on oil. This is not 1890, we DO have greater abilities. Secondly, we should shoot people like Bush and Sarah Palin who want to drill Alaska :noway:

But they are working on it. They already created expensive domes and tried filling it with concrete.

They DO have a plan. They're working on relief wells, but the relief wells take a long time to complete and won't be finished in August. Really, be specific, what do you want them to do? What if there isn't an immediate answer? It's their fault that it happened, but is it their fault that there's no easy fix?

Amen to both of those ;)

I'm not defending the spill that happened. It shouldn't have. There's no reason it should have. HOWEVER... I don't think anything more can be done to fix it once it actually started. They're using every measure available and there's nothing the US government can do, to my knowledge.

well that is idiotic. Even I am connected to that oil company since my friend works there. It is one of the biggest companies on earth. They will find 'ties' to all of us if they reach.

I understand that but you do realize that this whole nonchalant approach and downplaying the problem isn't really helping anyone because at the end of the day, you're killing a lot of animals and destorying the planet. MAYBE they need a heavier iron casing to case and connect. If there only goal at this point is to case it from floating to the top, they why is it so hard to do so?

It's nothing to do with how heavy it was and everything to do with chemical reactions that occurred underwater, clogging the dome. It's impossible to use precision so deep underwater and any efforts that they make to try to do things quickly are less likely to succeed because of the lack of accuracy.

How would telling people to panic help anyone? Screaming "OMG DISASTER! DISASTER! ENVIRONMENTAL CATASTROPHE! OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!" to the roof won't make them find a solution any faster. They're working to find a solution, you just seem to be angry that there isn't one.

Until they can properly take care of the issue, I'd like to hope that they're looking deep into the near future, pinpointing it's affects on the economy, the planet, and are sources of energy and start putting those actions into work.

Can I get a windmill in my backyard?

If you can afford it...

saying it's Obama's fault is just ignorant. What is he supposed to do? You can't just scoop the oil out with a bucket. BP is FULLY responsible and that's that.
