Could the avatars be bigger in size?

I think its great that the avatars can be bigger (150x150) but the size of them should be perhaps at least 75-150 kbs.

Why does avatar still look small?

I'll investigate moving it up into the 75-10kb range. Overall that probably won't create much of an overhead in the big scheme of things.

Elroy, you should have the ability to upload up to 150x150 pixels now- have you tried uploading a new avatar?
