LDS Church expects to 'regularize' activities in China
August 30th, 2010 @ 11:35am
SALT LAKE CITY - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints appears close to having "regularized" church operations in China.
Discussions between the LDS Church and the People's Republic of China began in February and continued in May when apostle Elder Dallin H. Oaks and Elder Donald L. Hallstrom of the Quorum of the Seventy met with a senior Chinese representative in Beijing.
Elder Oaks and Elder Hallstrom are responsible for overseeing the Church in Asia.
The meetings culminated on Tuesday, Aug. 24 when the First Presidency of the LDS Church met with the Chinese official at the Church Administration Building in Salt Lake City.
"It is important to understand what the term regularizing means, and what it does not mean," Church spokesman Michael Otterson said. "It does not mean that we anticipate sending missionaries to China. That issue is not even under consideration.
"The Church deeply appreciates the courtesy of the Chinese leadership in opening up a way to better define how the Church and its members can proceed with daily activities, all in harmony with Chinese law."
Otterson said many details still need to be worked out, but that the pending developments were the result of 30 years of building mutual trust with the Chinese.
"They have become thoroughly familiar with us through numerous contacts, and they have seen how we and our members operate in China. They know that we are people of our word when it comes to respecting Chinese law and cultural expectations," he said.
Are you a member of the LDS Church?

I'm pretty sure he said he is a Mormon on the original board. (I figured I'd answer since I'm sure he won't be back here to do so. ;) )

I would like to say, as a member of the Mormon Church, Regis is not representative of the Church as a whole.

Don't worry, we don't think Regis is representative of anything other than the Rush/Drudge sheeple. ;)

Haha, good, Pinky. Because as a member, it's embarrassing when someone represents the Church so poorly and ignorantly. We already have a lot to overcome with negative connotations against the Church and its members, and Regis is just not a good example of the wonderful people that are throughout the Church.

So are you claiming to be representative of the church as a whole?

And I suppose you represent the Church so well? That your political beliefs and beliefs are shared by the overwhelming majority of you church? Regis talks positively about Mitt Romney fairly often, is this another person that embarrasses you that he is a Mormon? You do realize that many of the people who run this board mocked the LDS on the other board as a put down on Regis?

No, I don't claim to be representative of the Church as a whole. I'm a convert of less than a year, but I don't go and say how awful the President is for making comments that people who are having a hard time paying their bills shouldn't be spending their money gambling, when the Prophet says we shouldn't gamble. I know next to nothing about Mitt Romney except he was a governor in Massachusetts and he's Mormon.
But I do know the year I lived in Utah and the year I've been going attending the Church, I have never met anyone so judgmental and acting so utterly ignorant as I have witnessed Regis act for years between here and LD. Even before I became a member, I was embarrassed for him, and the things I'd tell my Mormon friends would just shake their head in disbelief at his ignorance.

But it is okay for you and your Mormon freinds to be judgemental of Regis/sidewinder's views because......?????? Why do Liberals think that it is judgemental and ignorant to question their views, but when they question the views of others it is considered the ultimate in enlightenment?
We don't know his views, Paul. He hits and run. He doesn't engage in any conversation. Your post, however, is a direct attack on everyone you consider a "liberal."

He is highly judgmental, and goes directly against the teachings of the Church repeatedly in his posts. He doesn't come back to back up what he says or what he posts outside of the initial posts. I never said I was perfect, but I certainly don't behave in that manner. He's more than welcome to come in and defend his actions and change my mind.

Fascism! You hate our country!" whenever anyone proposes a "liberal" solution to our problems.

You are highly judgemental of him, you are a highly judgemental person. A fact which you are apparently ignorant of. The delicious irony is that you are judgemental and ignorant, exactly what you condemn Regis/sidewinder of being.

Never said I wasn't judgemental in fact to label me a judgemental person (with respect to my posts on this board) would not be incorrect. What I cannot tolerate is people who condemn someone else for being judgemental and ignorant and are completely ignorant of the fact that they are being judgemental themselves when they make such a statement. Yes, it is an almost universal trait among liberals that they are incapable of applying the same standards to themselves, that they apply to those with whom they disagree.

Because you've personally talked to the vast majority of liberals and know their thoughts intimately.

So be it. I judge people based on their posts here. They could be super nice in real life, and come off as a completely ignorant and judgmental person on a message board. That is all we know about a person on the internet, what they post. And from what Regis posts, I like to tell people his how his POSTS make him out to be is not representative of members of the Mormon Church as a whole.
